Filling My Cup...

It's been a while, but I'm feeling inspired today by far too many things to pass up the chance to channel that joy into a little bit of script.

I've recently discovered why so many people decide to live lives of mediocrity and status quo without even realizing it. (That's been me)

It was brought to my attention (as all breakthroughs are) by something that I believed was a complete disaster. So, much as a child is fine with crawling until he learns to walk, my eyes were opened up to how empty my cup as been in so many areas of my life.

Now here's the irony - I wasn't unhappy. I was "fine" (which, for most of us, is code for mostly bored, but occasionally having a little fun) with life. But I was putting things "on hold" and making excuses for not living in the state of joy that I know I'm capable of producing.

However, fortune smiled on me in the disguise of disaster, and made me look more closely at myself and why I was "fine" with life, but not excited about it? (If this sounds familiar, keep reading. If it doesn't, you're probably fooling yourself.)

Now, let's get one thing straight before I jump too far into this... I live a life that many people see as enviable. I've been blessed with chronic optimism, have more good friends in my life than most people, an incredible family, and have managed to stay healthy for the majority (minus one crazy snowboarding debacle) of my life.

So why was I just "fine" with things, and not over flowing? It was because I didn't realize how empty my cup was, until I stated filling it up. (and discovered that my cup isn't a shot glass, it's actually about the size of a barrell)

I had been so focused on what I wanted, but fooling myself that I had no room for it in my life. Boy, did I miss the boat on that one... it's kind of like saying you only have X amount of love to give to people- that's crazy. I mean, if you've ever had children (or nephews in my case) then you realize that no matter how much you love the first one, there's still an infinite amount of love left when the second child comes along. (Rather than cutting your love in half)

In that same way, just because I had a "full" life, didn't mean that there isn't "room" for so much more... I just needed to realize the space was there, create it as I wanted, and begin filling it up with all of the good that has been patiently waiting for my thick skull to realize it existed.

Once I did that, the flood gates have opened!

The dreams and hopes that I've been putting off have come to my doorstep. Not in the way that a random solicitor shows up, but more like a pizza delivery guy... I'm saying, I had to order up what I wanted, and "pay" in some way for what has arrived.

Since the "pizza guy" has shown up, I've been brimming with creativity, love, and a much greater sense of meaning than I've had in a very long time. I'm inspired by the most minute things, and even when things go wrong, I just laugh about them...

I've seen my life go from "fine" to creative and exponentially more productive. I'm reaching out in so many outlets and enjoying the best parts of "me". I'm dancing with more passion again, I've been writing in a way that I haven't in years, I'm painting again, music even sounds better- and best of all I'm laughing more! (You know, the kind of laughter that makes it feel like you did the Ab Cruncher the night before?)

Now don't get me wrong, life ISN'T perfect, but that's what makes it fun and why the (cliche warning) journey is the most important part of the road you're traveling!

So I urge you to measure your cup. Have you been looking at it as too full or felt that there isn't enough room for the inspiration and joy that you desire? If so, try something simple. Can you be inspired by the beauty of a sunny day or the joy in your dog wagging it's tail? Can you feel how much love is being shared by families and friends getting together for the holidays? Have you ever noticed how good it feels to take a deep breath and truly feel alive?

Soak it in... discover what is possible. This new year see the possibility of a reset and a new beginning with greater happiness as the star of the show! I know that it has been recently shown to me, and it's vastly more spectacular than any Imax theater I've ever seen!

What I'm saying is- I'm filling MY cup, so won't you fill yours too and join me for a drink?

New Favorite Quotes:

Just a quickie today, but I thought it was worth sharing these monsterously good quotes because they are a few that float through my (mostly empty - see picture on the right) head almost every day (and effect my life for the better).

Also, I have a belief that once your brain has been exposed to something, it will never think that same as it did before - so if I can share something that will inspire, help, or revolutionize your thinking - I think that's pretty neato!

So here are a few:

"Imagination is more important that knowledge"
~Albert Einstein

"Be kinder than necessary, everyone is fighting their own kind of battle"
~I have no idea

"Be the change you want to see in the world"
~Ghandi

"What is a good man, but a bad man's teacher & what is a bad man, but a good man's job"
~Lao Tzu

"Character is what you do when no one else is looking"
~Again... I have no idea

"The Universe if full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper"
-Eden Philpotts

Texas / California Dictionary...

Now that I've been in Houston for nearly 60 days, I thought I'd create a Los Angeles / Houston reference guide for those traveling back and forth. Both states have their quirks, so here's the quick "survival guide":

Swing Dancing:
Los Angeles - Lots of "Advanced" dancers and "Beginner" dancers, but few "Intermediates"
Houston - Lots of "Intermediate" dancers, but few of the others.

"Spiritual" Means:
California - You do yoga, own "The Secret" DVD, are probably a vegitarian, and believe energy governs the universe.
Texas - You're too lazy to go to chruch. (and you believe that the energy industry governs the universe)

Los Angeles - A box fan.

View of America:
-Los Angeles believes the USA is a terrible, selfish country that exploits children around the world and must repay the world with ineffective charities and though guilt about being successful.
-Houston believes that America is the 2nd best country in the world (Next to Texas).

Main Top Topic in a Weekly Business Meeting:
Los Angeles - Why casual Friday is so important.

Recipe for fun...

I just wanted to express the absolute joy of the 2 beer buzz. You see, there are plenty of different types of buzzes and “drunks” out there, but nothing beats the simplicity and fun of the 2 beer buzz.

Because this is one of life's most amazing recipes, I’m going to give it to you to enjoy:

1 Empty Stomach

2 beers

1 good friend (or substitute some of your favorite music)

Mix together to create a guaranteed good time. (...and if you're drinking Dos Equis you may become more interesting with each sip).

Note: Also, done mid day with the sun shining is a nice extra touch.

Try it out and let me know if you agree that it’s one of the best things ever.

Friends in Town...

This weekend was a chance to feel a little like I was back in California, but with an extra helping of Texas hospitality. Some good friends were in town teaching a swing dance workshop (which I didn't end up attending due to holding 3 jobs currently) and because of them the dancing was good enough that even some of my shenannagans went unnoticed.

It's funny because I know Jordan and Tatiana as friends, but they were clearly only one step down from Heaven to many people here in Houston. I must have heard, "Oh my God, I want to go say hi to Jordan, but I don't dare..." more times that I heard someone say "Y'all" (and that's a LOT). And for those that I did introduce to Jordan or Tat, picture taking then swooning were the next steps in their progression of worship.

Needless to say, they are both worthy of this kind of praise because in addition to being the best west coast swing dancers in the world (in my biased yet unfalteringly accurate opinion), they are two of the best people I've ever met. Rather than being fake and ungracious, they are actually completely thankful that they get to live the life of their dreams... Now who can fault that?

Ok - Enough (completely warranted) praise... Here's a video that I thought was worth posting of their performance on Friday night at the Melody Club here in Houston. For those who don't know, this isn't a routine, it's just them dancing spur of the moment to a great version of a classic american anthem - Enjoy!

PS- If you're interested in learning how to do this kind of Swing Dancing you can find out more about where to take classes in Houston or in Southern California by clicking the links. (Or comment below if you're in other areas, and I'll hook you up.)

The Beauty of the Moment...

I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not, but I think I've been blessed with the ability to live in the moment - the problem is that the consequences in an hour or two aren't always kind to this type of rationale...

However, in tribute to living in the moment, I'm going to recap a few of my 'mucho appreciado' (no I wasn't a Spanish Major in college) living the moment, moments... and the insight that they've offered me.

1) The first time I discovered the beauty of 2 beers on an empty stomach.

2) Realizing that I do actually like sunsets and long walks on the beach.... (errr... can I take this one back?)

3) Learning to paint again at age 29 and liking it WAY better than video games (or at least until Guitar Hero 2 came out)

4) Discovering the Karaoke bars that will let you rent your own room and allow you to publicly embarrass yourself in private company.

5) The night I rejoiced at the understanding that women judge men by more than just our appearance...

6) The first morning that I realized that there are few things more underrated than putting on new socks and good smelling hand soap.

7) The understanding that everything has it's place... For example, Country music is about Sunday - Friday, and Hip Hop is all about Saturday night! Both fill different needs and aren't mutually exclusive.

So those are just a few snapshots of my 'Moments of Clarity' into how life REALLY works, and how living in the moment has made me a better man while only getting me into a little trouble.

The First 30 Days in Texas...

I'd heard the stories, but didn't realize that Texas actually IS it's own country. (Guess I'm glad they didn't make me get a passport to move here). That pretty much summarizes the mad dash that has characterized my first 30 days in Houston.

I love the people here 100%. I've already met a whole gaggle of fun folks to dance, drink, and conquer the world with me... I haven't been through the crazy heatwaves that everyone complains about - but I'm not holding my breath.

Texas is also SUPER cheap. Great food, houses, drinks, etc are less than half of what they cost in So Cal, so I'm enjoying that to the fullest. For me that means dancing a few nights a week, exploring the new areas of town like Rice Village, Mid Town, Montrose and meeting lots-o-people along the way.

As for the reason that I moved here - 30 days in I've got my insurance license and am hoping to be out on the road helping business owners by next week. To accomplish this I've had to pass my test, get finger printed, file all the maddening paperwork, and deal with governmental employees... All while living on my best friend's couch. How's that for FUN?

Anyway, if my first 30 days is any crystal ball indicating how the rest of my time here will be spent, then I'm excited! If you have any suggestions on what I should check out next, feel free to comment!

My Drive Across the Country (SLC to Houston)

First leg of the trip revealed that "Footlose" was really filmed in Utah...
Here is the mill where Kevin Bacon worked in the movie...

Angular view of the beautiful Utah countryside on the way to I-70 via Price, Utah.

My smiling mug along with my whole wardrobe in the back seat.
Viva la roadtrip!
This is the notorious "No Name Exit"
(it's an urban myth that I'm starting)

The scenery in Colorado is incredible, however tunnels really limit the view...
One of the less famous viewpoints from which to see downtown Denver....
This was the most exciting thing I saw in about 4 hours of traveling through Kansas...
Keeping the sunset in my rear view mirror traveling East across the Great Plains...
Where I woke up on Day 2 about 9:00 AM after getting in at 2 AM...
(I know, it's fancy)
Oklahoma City here I come!
(The rain had different ideas)
This clearly says "Welcome to Oklahoma" (right?)
The wonder that is... Downtown Oklahoma City...
I don't know why I didn't think of 25 cent cologne dispensers like they have in the truckstop bathrooms in Oklahoma... I'm sure I'd be rich if I'd thought of it first!
Yeee Haaaaw! I made it to Texas...
Ran into crappy traffic 45 minutes before Dallas. Was this a bad omen or what?
Fortunately the traffic cleared up and I made it to Dallas unscathed...
Downtown Dallas before I turned my sites on Houston and finished up the trip...
